For the first time in 12 years, Camilo spent the night alone in the hospital. Reflecting on this moment, it’s hard to believe this milestone has finally come. For over a decade, one of us has always been by his side, providing comfort through every beep of the machines, every late-night nurse check, every smile, and every tear. However, this week, life threw us a curveball. Massimo fell ill, and Dad had to be out of town for work, leading us into uncharted waters. We had to do something we’d never done before: allow Camilo to stay by himself overnight in the hospital. To our surprise, he handled it remarkably well.
This moment was significant. It represents a huge shift for us as parents, and especially for Camilo. For years, he has depended on our constant presence, feeling secure knowing we were there to face every challenge together. But now, as he continues to grow and gain more independence, this small step feels like a giant leap in his journey. Letting go was incredibly difficult for me, but witnessing him embrace this change with such strength and maturity filled me with pride.

Before leaving for the night, the nurses provided incredible reassurance. They understood how important this moment was for both Camilo and me, offering comfort and support. They promised to take care of him, entertain him, and ensure he had everything he needed. What touched me most was when they prayed with me—praying for peace for all of us, that Camilo would feel safe, and that we could rest easy knowing he was in good hands. The kindness and compassion from the nursing team were overwhelming, and I will forever be grateful for it, as it gave me the peace of mind I needed to step away and let Camilo rest without us.
Despite their reassurances, I must admit that I didn’t sleep much that night. I spent hours staring at the ceiling, praying and worrying. I kept checking my phone, anxiously awaiting updates from the nurses. I knew Camilo was safe, but as a parent, it’s hard to let go of that constant need to protect. It was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, but also one of the most rewarding in terms of witnessing Camilo’s growth.

As for Camilo, he embraced the entire experience. He referred to it as his “first sleepover” and seemed to view it positively. Honestly, he had the best babysitters in town—the nurses! You can’t beat the round-the-clock care, snacks on demand, and people who genuinely enjoy checking vitals and ensuring comfort. I also can’t forget Annie, the nurse next door, who kept an eye on him. With all the care and love surrounding him, Camilo was in the best hands possible. In his eyes, this hospital sleepover was just another fun adventure, where he got to be independent while having everything he needed at his fingertips.
For us, this moment has been a tremendous growth experience. It has taught us about patience, trust, and the delicate balance of letting go just a little. As parents, stepping back and allowing our children to gain more independence is not easy. However, this experience has shown me just how capable Camilo is. Even in a hospital setting, where he has always been surrounded by medical equipment and doctors, Camilo was brave. He faced the situation with courage, making us realize that, although we may always be by his side in spirit, he is learning to stand on his own two feet in the face of challenges.

This experience has also reminded us of how far we’ve come in Camilo’s journey. From the beginning, his health has been a constant battle, requiring our full attention, care, and support. Every hospital stay, every procedure, and every new treatment has tested our resilience, not only for Camilo but for our entire family. Yet, with each step forward, we’ve seen him grow stronger, braver, and more capable of handling the challenges that arise. Though the road has been long and filled with uncertainty, moments like these make it all worthwhile. Camilo’s ability to spend the night alone in the hospital speaks volumes about how far he has come, both physically and emotionally.
The nurses’ prayers, their kindness, and the support from the entire healthcare team made it clear that Camilo is never truly alone. We have an incredible support system, not only in our family and friends but also in the people who care for him when we can’t be there. Their love for Camilo and dedication to his well-being have been a constant source of comfort for us. Knowing he is surrounded by people who love him and genuinely care about his recovery gives us peace of mind during the toughest moments.

As Camilo continues to grow and heal, we’re learning more about what it means to trust the process and let go of some of the control we’ve held tightly. This journey is about much more than just physical healing—it’s about emotional growth, independence, and finding new ways to support him as he becomes the young person he’s meant to be. This sleepover, in its own small way, symbolizes that growth.
Camilo, you amaze us every day. You are brave, capable, and so deeply loved. We are incredibly proud of you for embracing this new step with such strength. Your heart, spirit, and determination inspire us to keep moving forward. We will always be here for you, cheering you on as you continue to grow stronger and braver each day. You are an inspiration to us all. 💛
