After months of worry, treatment, and tireless prayer, Matt and Calah Barnes are finally preparing to bring their son Barrett, affectionately known as Brave Bear, back home to Hoover, Alabama, with his sister Elisabeth. Since January, the Barnes family has been living at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, facing one of the toughest battles any family can endure — Barrett’s fight against ATRT, a rare and aggressive brain cancer.
Barrett’s journey began with surgery at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital on January 21, where he spent several weeks in the ICU. By February 4, he had been transferred to St. Jude’s ICU, where the grueling regimen of high-dose chemotherapy and proton radiation began. Over the months, he endured four rounds of high-dose chemotherapy, 30 rounds of proton radiation, followed by two more rounds of chemo after radiation. Each treatment carried risk, discomfort, and uncertainty, but Barrett faced it with remarkable courage.

“We have been at St. Jude since the beginning of the year!” Calah shared in a heartfelt message. She recounted the family’s journey with gratitude and faith, noting that Barrett’s tumor, located in the cerebellum and attached to the brainstem, required precise and delicate surgery. His neurosurgeon, Dr. Klimo, was able to remove over 90% of the tumor, leaving a small portion to prevent permanent damage to his cranial nerves.
Despite the odds, Barrett’s response to treatment has been nothing short of miraculous. By April, scans showed no evidence of the remaining tumor, a result that astonished his oncologists. ATRT often does not respond to chemotherapy, yet Barrett’s resilience and the careful care of his medical team resulted in a full response in record time.
“All God,” Calah wrote, emphasizing the family’s faith and gratitude. “Our oncologist was surprised because ATRT typically doesn’t respond this quickly. Sometimes it doesn’t respond to chemo at all. So again, this is nothing short of a miracle. God has shown His hand in Barrett’s story.”

For the Barnes family, every milestone has been a cause for quiet celebration. Despite the physical toll of treatments, transfusions, and hospital stays, Barrett’s courage has been unwavering. His parents have watched him endure challenges that would shake even the strongest adults, yet he has faced each one with bravery that inspires all who know his story.
Now, after months of chemotherapy, radiation, and ICU care, the family is hopeful. Following more scans and necessary platelet transfusions, Barrett is expected to return home a few weeks before Christmas — a gift that feels greater than any wrapped under the tree.
“This has been a long journey of faith and perseverance,” Calah said. “Barrett is going to have an amazing testimony one day, and he is going to know that it was the good Lord who healed him! We just need to continue praying that he stays cancer-free forever, and all future scans show NO evidence of disease. There is SO much power in prayer.”

The news of Barrett’s recovery has spread joy to friends, family, and the broader community who have followed his fight. What began as a terrifying diagnosis has transformed into a story of hope, resilience, and the unbreakable power of faith. Barrett’s journey reminds us that miracles can happen, that love and prayer are potent forces, and that even in the darkest moments, light can break through.
As the holidays approach, the Barnes family prepares to finally leave the hospital and celebrate at home. Barrett’s arrival will mark not just a Christmas reunion, but a triumph over adversity, a testament to his strength, his family’s unwavering support, and the prayers that have carried them through the year.
For everyone following Barrett’s story, it’s a chance to reflect on the resilience of children, the dedication of medical teams, and the profound impact of faith in moments of crisis. What could have been a season of sorrow is instead a season of hope, gratitude, and celebration — all because of the bravery of one young boy and the love that surrounded him.
This Christmas, the Barnes family will gather at home, no longer bound by hospital walls, to cherish the gift of health, family, and answered prayers. Brave Bear is going home, and with him, he carries a story that will inspire everyone who hears it: that miracles exist, that faith matters, and that even in the hardest battles, hope can prevail.
💛 If you’ve been inspired by Barrett’s story, take a moment to lift him in prayer — and celebrate the incredible courage of a little boy who has already taught the world so much.
