Life can change in an instant, and for 15-year-old Michael, it certainly did. Once a healthy, active teen with dreams and ambitions, Michael’s world was suddenly turned upside down when he was diagnosed with MOGAD (Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody Disease). In the blink of an eye, Michael’s life as he knew it transformed. What followed was a journey filled with hospital rooms, uncertainty, and the fight of his life.
For the past 23 days, Michael has called a hospital room home. Struggling to adjust to the harsh reality of his new condition, he now faces life as a quadriplegic. His once free-spirited days of running and playing are replaced by long hours of rehab, fighting for the smallest victories. But despite the challenges, Michael’s heart remains full of hope, and his wish was simple: to feel like himself again. His wish? An electric blanket to warm his nights, sneakers to remind him of the life he once led, and a birthday spent surrounded by friends and loved ones.
A Birthday Like No Other
Michael’s wish may have seemed small, but it was monumental in the context of his life right now. Just hours before his birthday party, the doctors gave Michael the news he’d been waiting for—he was cleared to take his first bite of food in weeks. That small victory set the stage for what was to become a birthday filled with joy, gratitude, and celebration. With a pizza and birthday cake in front of him, Michael was able to experience a moment of normalcy amid the chaos and uncertainty of his ongoing battle.
It wasn’t just the food or the presents that made Michael’s day special. It was the people around him, the friends, and family who came together to make his birthday memorable. For Michael, surrounded by the love and warmth of those closest to him, it was a reminder that even in the darkest times, there are still reasons to smile, to laugh, and to hope for the future.
A Community That Cares
What made Michael’s birthday even more meaningful was the generous support he received from those who care deeply about children and families like his. The Little Wishes program, an initiative designed to make hospital stays a little brighter, granted Michael’s wish as the very first one at Banner Children’s at Desert. Thanks to this program, children like Michael can still experience the joys of childhood, even as they face tough medical battles.
We are especially grateful to the sponsors of this program, Mike and Ali Cornelison from the Danali Fund. Their generosity has made dreams like Michael’s possible. It’s because of the Cornelison family’s support that Little Wishes can be brought to hospitals like Banner Children’s, ensuring that children fighting serious illnesses still have access to the little joys that make life special.

A Long Road Ahead
Michael’s journey is far from over. The road to recovery will be long, and the challenges he faces will not be easy. As he works tirelessly through rehab, Michael remains determined to regain his independence and lead a life filled with possibility. His wish for a birthday celebration, surrounded by friends, was just one step in the process of reclaiming his sense of normalcy. But it’s these small moments of joy that give him the strength to keep going.
The road ahead is filled with unknowns, but Michael’s courage and resilience are undeniable. With the support of his loved ones and the community behind him, he knows that anything is possible. Whether it’s the warmth of an electric blanket, the comfort of sneakers that remind him of his past, or the love of friends and family, Michael’s journey will be made a little easier because of the kindness and generosity that surrounds him.
Making Dreams Come True
Michael’s story is a powerful reminder of how important it is to make space for hope and joy, even in the most difficult of circumstances. For children like Michael, who face life-altering challenges, something as simple as a birthday celebration or a favorite meal can make all the difference. These moments remind them—and us—that even in the darkest times, there are still reasons to smile, to wish, and to believe in a brighter tomorrow.
We are deeply thankful to those who made Michael’s birthday possible and to the Little Wishes program for continuing to bring light into the lives of children facing serious health challenges. With the support of the Cornelison family and the countless others who contribute to these efforts, dreams like Michael’s will continue to be realized, one wish at a time.
Michael’s wish was simple, but its impact is profound. It’s a reminder that no matter how tough life gets, the power of community and generosity can make a world of difference. We wish Michael all the best as he continues his journey, and we hope that every little wish, every small victory, brings him closer to the life he deserves.
As Michael’s journey unfolds, we’re reminded of the power of hope and the strength of a community that refuses to give up. Together, we can make dreams come true.
