The reality of our situation hit us hard, and the fight for our little treasure’s health began immediately.
The first weeks of Mikołaj’s life were filled with unimaginable fear. We were told that our son might not survive. The doctors informed us that his condition was worsening by the day, especially the damage to his brain. Each day brought a new wave of devastating news. Mikołaj remained unconscious, and we were helpless as he suffered from increasingly severe strokes. The final verdict was grim: very extensive intraventricular hemorrhages. The prognosis was bleak. We found ourselves in a hospital corridor, drowning in tears, with hearts heavy from the weight of helplessness.
In the days that followed, more shocking news arrived. Tumors were discovered in Mikołaj’s body, but their nature remained uncertain. These tumors only added to the worry and stress that had already consumed us. Our brave son received multiple blood transfusions and spent two weeks on a ventilator. The stroke had left behind a large post-hemorrhagic lesion, which put his life in even more danger. With his blood pressure skyrocketing, the doctors made the difficult decision to perform surgery to drain the cerebrospinal fluid and the clots that had formed. It was an agonizing wait, as we clung to the hope that Mikołaj would survive.
And survive he did—against all odds. But the road to recovery has been long and painful. The stroke’s aftermath caused irreversible brain damage, and the complications left Mikołaj with significant challenges. However, thanks to the remarkable plasticity of the brain in the early months of life, there is still hope. Mikołaj’s condition can improve with the right treatment, rehabilitation, and early developmental support. We hold onto that hope every day.
In the face of all these challenges, Mikołaj’s strength has been nothing short of inspiring. Despite his struggles, he continues to fight. Yet, every day is a challenge. He is unable to walk and struggles with basic bodily functions, including constipation, due to his condition.
