Marek is a beacon of light for all who know him. He embodies courage, resilience, and love, yet his childhood has been anything but easy. From the moment he entered the world, Marek’s life has been filled with challenges—challenges that no child should have to endure. Born with HLHS (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome), a condition where only one chamber of the heart is functional, his journey began as a relentless fight for survival. But this was just the start.
As his parents, we have watched in despair as our son confronted one obstacle after another. We have fought alongside him every day, and we continue to do so. However, in 2022, just when we thought we might catch a break, we were hit with another heartbreaking diagnosis: papillary thyroid cancer. Those words felt like a punch to the gut. I can still recall the moment the doctor explained the seriousness of the situation, and I felt my heart sink. How could this be happening to our beloved boy? The news left us gasping for breath and filled with dread about the future. Yet, despite our fear, we knew we had to act quickly—Marek needed us more than ever.
Marek’s path took another challenging turn. He underwent surgery to remove his thyroid and the affected lymph nodes. For a child already grappling with the unimaginable difficulties of living with HLHS, this new battle felt overwhelming. Yet, Marek, with his courageous spirit, continued to fight. He received specialized treatments to combat the cancer, but unfortunately, these treatments brought their own complications. The impact on Marek’s already delicate heart was severe. His heart, which had undergone multiple surgeries in the past, was now at risk, and doctors were concerned about how much more his body could endure.
As if this wasn’t enough, in July 2024, Marek had to have his gallbladder removed. What should have been a straightforward procedure turned into yet another battle. The surgery damaged his lymphatic vessels, leading to fluid buildup in his body and further complicating his health. Just as we were trying to cope with this setback, we received more distressing news: Marek’s heart was no longer functioning properly. The boy who had already faced so much was now confronting the unimaginable—a weakening heart and a compromised liver.
Our worst fears had materialized. Marek’s strength was diminishing, and it became evident that his only hope for survival was a heart and liver transplant. Our hearts shattered once more. We had already witnessed our son fight for his life countless times, but now we faced an uncertain future, unsure of what tomorrow would hold. Marek had always been the fighter, the one who smiled through adversity, who never surrendered, but now, we were confronted with a reality where even his remarkable strength might not suffice.
Nevertheless, Marek’s courage has never wavered. Despite the immense toll that these surgeries, treatments, and setbacks have taken on his small body, he remains brave and hopeful. His spirit is unbreakable, inspiring everyone around him. However, the truth is that the road ahead remains incredibly challenging, and we need assistance.
The expenses for medications, doctor visits, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical care are overwhelming. We are doing everything within our power, but it’s simply not enough.
