Mackenzie’s Inspiring Journey: A Tale of Love, Hope, and Resilience

For Ally and Jacob, welcoming their daughter, Mackenzie, marked the realization of a long-held dream. As new parents, their excitement was immense, and they eagerly anticipated their life as a family. Ally, a midwife, experienced a smooth pregnancy, and Mackenzie’s delivery was straightforward. However, the challenges that followed were unforeseen.

Shortly after Mackenzie’s arrival, Ally and Jacob began to notice troubling signs. Their newborn exhibited jaundice and lethargy, and breastfeeding was not progressing as they had hoped. What seemed like minor concerns escalated when Mackenzie’s abdomen started to swell, becoming distended and purple. Initially, they suspected it was just gas, but as days passed, it became evident that something was seriously wrong.

“We had to stay an extra night in the hospital,” Ally recalls, “and then we had to return twice within the first week.” It was when Mackenzie’s condition deteriorated that they understood they could not delay seeking help.

At the community clinic, a nurse suggested overfeeding, but Ally was skeptical. Mackenzie had gained 600 grams in just five days, significantly more than a newborn typically should. After sending a photo to her GP, Ally was instructed to take Mackenzie to the hospital for further evaluation.

Upon arrival at the Children’s Hospital, Mackenzie was immediately taken through Emergency. A series of tests ensued, starting with an x-ray that ruled out bowel obstruction, yet the doctors remained concerned. An ultrasound followed, leading to a heart-stopping moment when Ally and Jacob were ushered into a small room, where they received the devastating news: Mackenzie had a tumor, and the oncology team would be coming to discuss it with them.

“All I remember is hearing the words ‘tumor’ and ‘oncology,'” Ally shares, her voice still filled with disbelief. “You never expect to hear those words about your own child. They are among the most terrifying words you could hear.”

The news struck them like a thunderbolt. Ally and Jacob sat in stunned silence, their hearts racing. What they had anticipated to be a routine check-up had spiraled into a nightmare. For what felt like an eternity, they waited, praying for a glimmer of hope. When the oncology team finally arrived, the diagnosis was confirmed: Mackenzie had neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that had metastasized to her liver and bone marrow.

“It’s such a huge thing for them to hear,” Ally recalls of the call she made to her parents. “I didn’t know what to say.” Despite the heavy burden of the diagnosis, the oncologists reassured them that Mackenzie’s age—being a neonate—offered a more favorable prognosis, with a survival rate of approximately 97%.

Immediately, Ally and Jacob faced tough choices. Treatment needed to commence without delay, and Mackenzie was soon connected to a central line, preparing for her first chemotherapy session. The initial treatments were challenging. Ally, being a midwife, had to bottle-feed Mackenzie with expressed breast milk, as the fluids had to be meticulously managed. It was heartbreaking for Ally to see her baby in such distress, especially with the catheter and central line in place.

“I was heartbroken,” Ally confesses. “Even holding her was difficult. She had cords coming from everywhere.” Nevertheless, Ally and Jacob persevered, tackling each day as it came and supporting one another through this unimaginable ordeal.

During this challenging time, they chose to enroll Mackenzie in the Zero Childhood Cancer program (ZERO), which provided genomic testing to better understand her cancer. The tests confirmed that Mackenzie did not have any genetic alterations associated with high-risk neuroblastoma, and they reassured the couple that her treatment plan would remain unchanged.

With each passing day, the family held onto hope. After a brief break for Christmas, it was back to the hospital for more chemotherapy. There were moments when the results felt disheartening, especially after the second round of chemo when scans indicated no change in the tumor. “It was really, really hard,” Ally recalls. “We were like, oh my God, can’t believe we have to put her through that again.”

However, progress soon followed. After two additional rounds of treatment, Mackenzie’s tumor had shrunk by 50%, and no further chemotherapy was necessary. Each subsequent scan revealed more encouraging results. The liver and bone marrow were clear, and while Mackenzie still had the primary tumor in her adrenal gland, doctors remained optimistic it would continue to diminish over time.

In November 2024, nearly a year after Mackenzie’s diagnosis, Ally, Jacob, and their extended family gathered for an “end of treatment” ceremony. The ringing of the bell signified the conclusion of this arduous journey, and for the first time, they felt a sense of relief.

Today, Mackenzie is flourishing. At home, she is described as “a busy little bee” by Ally, keeping everyone on their toes with her playful and spirited demeanor. “She’s making up for lost time,” Ally laughs. “We’re just so grateful that she’s doing so well.”

Reflecting on their journey, Ally acknowledges how profoundly their lives have transformed. While she grieves the time lost during Mackenzie’s early months—when the newborn experience was overshadowed by hospital visits and chemotherapy—she also feels a newfound strength. “Having gone through the hardest ordeal that parents can face, I believe we can overcome anything.”

Through it all, Ally, Jacob, and Mackenzie have forged a close-knit bond, drawing strength from one another and the deep love they share. “We feel so connected, the three of us, and we consider ourselves incredibly fortunate every day,” Ally expresses, her voice filled with gratitude. Their journey has been fraught with challenges, yet it stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of love and hope.
