Sylwia’s Battle: A Young Girl’s Bravery Against a Terrifying Illness

Sylwia's Battle: A Young Girl's Bravery Against a Terrifying Illness

At just six years old, Sylwia filled her days with laughter, dance, and joy. She adored drawing, playing outdoors, and sharing stories that brought smiles to her parents’ faces. However, last year, on Corpus Christi Day, their ordinary happiness was shattered by a nightmare every parent dreads: pain, panic, and a diagnosis that turned their world upside down.

It all started with back pain. Initially mild, the kind of discomfort every child experiences after a day of play. But as Sylwia’s pain intensified, her parents took her to a 24-hour medical facility. From that point, everything spiraled out of control. She was quickly moved to the emergency department and then directly to the oncology unit at the University Children’s Hospital in Krakow.

There, they heard the words no parent should ever have to hear: Stage IV neuroblastoma.

A malignant tumor was growing in their little girl’s abdomen, and even worse, it had already spread to her bone marrow and bones.

“Time stopped,” her parents remember. “We couldn’t comprehend how this could happen. One moment she was playing and laughing, and the next, we were told she had cancer everywhere.”

From that moment on, their lives became a whirlwind of hospital visits, chemotherapy treatments, and sleepless nights. Every decision and thought centered around one goal: keeping Sylwia alive.

The first phase of treatment began swiftly — seven exhausting cycles of chemotherapy. Her tiny body endured the most potent drugs available. Nausea, fatigue, hair loss — she faced them all without complaint, often reassuring her distressed parents with the words, “Don’t worry, I’ll be okay.”

Following those seven cycles, she underwent high-dose chemotherapy, an even more aggressive treatment aimed at eradicating the remaining cancer. It left her weak and fragile, yet still determined to fight. The most challenging phase was yet to come — a hematopoietic stem cell transplant, a procedure that would test her body to its limits.

The side effects were severe. Her mouth and esophagus were burned from within. She couldn’t eat or drink. Every breath was painful. She required multiple blood transfusions, constant medication, and round-the-clock care. Her parents could only hold her hand, whisper prayers, and promise her that she would pull through.

“She was so small,” her mother said, “but incredibly brave. Even when she couldn’t speak, she would squeeze our hands to show us she wasn’t giving up.”

On November 22, 2024, Sylwia underwent another significant surgery — a laparotomy and extended biopsy of the remaining tumor. The doctors worked tirelessly, but they couldn’t completely remove the tumor. Complications arose — dangerously low oxygen levels and difficulty breathing. Sylwia spent a week in intensive care, surrounded by machines, her tiny body fighting to recover.

Those days felt interminable. Her parents remained by her side, terrified of losing her. Yet, once again, their little warrior demonstrated strength beyond anyone’s expectations.

Now, Sylwia continues her battle. She is receiving radiation therapy under general anesthesia and will soon travel to Warsaw for additional treatment and testing. Her journey is far from over. The cancer remains unpredictable — every scan brings both hope and fear. But Sylwia confronts it all with a bravery that belies her age.

Her parents beam with pride through their tears. “She’s grown so much. She understands what’s happening, and she’s still smiling. She tells us she wants to get better so she can return to school and play with her friends.”

Yet, behind the smiles lies a daily struggle — financial, emotional, and physical. Each hospital stay, every trip to another city, and every treatment session depletes the family’s already limited savings. Nevertheless, they refuse to surrender.

“We must keep fighting for our daughter,” they express. “We can’t do this alone. Every bit of help — every donation, every shared word — brings us closer to saving her life.”

Sylwia’s story is one of unimaginable suffering, but also of unbreakable love. A six-year-old girl battling a monster within her body — and a family that refuses to lose hope.

They believe in miracles. They believe in kindness. And they trust that somewhere in this vast world, hearts will respond to their plea.

Because no child should have to fight alone.
And no parent should have to witness their light fade without the chance to fight back.

Sylwia still possesses that light — bright, brave, and shining. With your support, it can continue to glow.
Please, help this little girl win her battle.
