Sometimes, bravery comes in the smallest forms. Ten-year-old Staś Milczarczyk has encountered more challenges in his brief life than many adults ever will. He maintains a smile through every hospital visit, every injection, and every surgery, even when the future seems overwhelmingly uncertain.
“He’s an incredible child,” his parents share. “Despite everything, he continues to smile.”
A Battle No Child Should Endure

Staś’s narrative is one of suffering and resilience. When he was first diagnosed with a malignant tumor on his kidney, his family’s world shattered. Chemotherapy commenced immediately, and for a while, they dared to hope. However, as weeks went by, optimism turned into dread as the tumors stopped responding to treatment and began to grow again.
In Wrocław, where the family sought a second opinion, doctors delivered the heartbreaking news: Staś’s left kidney was beyond saving. The malignant growths were too widespread. Time was of the essence, and the decision was made to remove it entirely.
“We didn’t even have time to think,” his mother remembers. “All we could do was pray he’d survive the surgery.”
The Surgery That Altered Everything
On May 16th, Staś underwent his second and hopefully final operation — a complete nephrectomy, which involved the removal of his left kidney. The hours dragged painfully as his parents waited outside the operating room, each second feeling like an eternity.
When it was finally over, Staś was transferred to the intensive care unit, pale and fragile, surrounded by machines. The doctors delivered the news no one wants to hear — their son now had only half of his right kidney left, measuring barely 2.5 centimeters.
“We were terrified of what would come next,” his father states. “They told us to prepare for dialysis.”
But then, a small miracle occurred — on the second day after surgery, Staś’s remaining kidney began to recover. Gradually, his body started producing urine again. The doctors smiled for the first time in days.
“We could finally breathe,” his mother says, tears in her eyes. “It felt like life was returning to him.”
Living with Hope
Staś’s recovery remains delicate. During the surgery, doctors also conducted biopsies on his liver and other organs to check for metastases. The results will dictate his next treatment steps — but for now, he must continue chemotherapy, even as his small body grows weaker.
“Every new result feels like holding your breath,” his father confesses. “We never know what tomorrow will bring.”
Just when the family thought things couldn’t get tougher, they received more distressing news — one of Staś’s legs is three centimeters longer than the other. While it may seem minor compared to cancer, it causes pain and balance issues, hindering normal development. He now requires custom orthopedic shoes to walk properly, adding yet another financial burden to their already overwhelming medical expenses.

The Price of Survival
The battle for Staś’s life is not only emotional — it’s also financially devastating. Frequent hospital visits, specialized shoes, medications, and travel for treatment have drained the family’s resources. Yet, surrendering is not an option.
“We’re doing everything we can,” his parents express. “But we can’t do it alone anymore. Every bit of help — every donation — keeps us going.”
They’ve learned to live day by day, cherishing small victories: a favorable test result, a night without pain, a smile after a long day of chemotherapy.
“He’s shown us what true strength looks like,” his mother shares. “Even when he’s unwell, he laughs. He tells us not to cry.”
