Until a few months ago, nine-year-old Wojtek was the kind of child every parent dreams of — brimming with energy, laughter, and endless curiosity. He enjoyed running, kicking a football, and playing outdoors with his friends until dusk. His mother, Ewa, recalls those moments vividly — days that now seem like a distant memory.
“He was unstoppable,” she reflects softly. “Always moving, always smiling. I never thought anything could take that away from him.”
From a Simple Ache to a Nightmare

It all started just before Christmas when Wojtek began to complain about pain in his legs. It seemed innocuous — perhaps growing pains or soreness from too much soccer practice. “He trained a lot,” Ewa explains. “So when he mentioned pain, I thought it was just fatigue.”
However, on December 22nd, the pain escalated. It became intense and unyielding. By the next morning, Wojtek was in tears from the agony. Ewa’s instincts warned her that something was seriously wrong, prompting her to rush him to the emergency room.
The doctors conducted X-rays and tests, but everything appeared normal. “They gave him strong painkillers and sent us home,” Ewa remembers. “But the pain didn’t cease — it only intensified.”
When they returned to the hospital the following day, doctors ordered an MRI. What they discovered left them in shock.
“There’s a tumor in his spine,” the doctor said quietly.
In that moment, Ewa’s world crumbled. “I couldn’t breathe,” she recalls. “I looked at the screen and saw the image — a dark mass pressing on his spinal cord. The doctor said they had to operate immediately. My son’s life was at risk.”
Emergency Surgery and a Mother’s Fear

Within two hours, Wojtek was in surgery. The tumor had been compressing his spinal cord, causing his leg pain, headaches, and increasing weakness. One wrong move could have left him paralyzed forever.
The operation lasted for hours. Ewa waited anxiously outside, her hands clenched until they hurt. “I prayed like never before,” she says. “Just let him live.”
When the doctors finally emerged, there was a fragile sense of relief — the tumor had been successfully removed. But the danger was not over. Wojtek had to learn to walk again.
“His legs were weak,” Ewa shares. “Every step was painful, but he never gave up. Each day he tried again. Step by step. Sometimes crying, sometimes laughing. He’s the bravest boy I’ve ever known.”
For a brief moment, it felt like hope was returning. Doctors believed the tumor might be benign and advised the family to rest while awaiting final results.
Then, the phone call came.
“Please come back. The tumor is malignant.”
Ewa’s heart sank. “I remember standing still,” she says. “I could hear the words, but they didn’t register. Malignant. Cancer. My little boy…”
A New Battle Begins

On January 9th, Wojtek was readmitted. The tests confirmed every parent’s worst fear — his tumor was cancerous, and chemotherapy needed to start immediately.
The initial rounds were mild, but the subsequent ones — six consecutive days of intense chemotherapy — drained him completely. “He’s weak and tired,” Ewa explains. “Some days he doesn’t want to return to the hospital. He just wants to go to school and see his friends again.”
Despite the pain, Wojtek continues to fight. He perseveres through rehabilitation, gripping the wall as he takes slow, determined steps. Each step is a victory.
“He tells himself to be strong,” Ewa says. “He wants to win. He wants to play football again.”
The Road Ahead
The journey to recovery is long and uncertain — months of chemotherapy, tests, and specialized rehabilitation lie ahead. Ewa and her family are committed to doing everything possible, but the financial burden is overwhelming.
“Treatment, travel, rehabilitation — it’s more than we can manage alone,” she admits. “But we have no choice. We must fight for him.”
Each day in the hospital presents new challenges: nausea, weakness, and the anxiety of what the next scan might reveal. Yet amidst the exhaustion, there’s a quiet strength propelling them forward — the strength of a mother who refuses to surrender, and a boy who still dreams of running across a field, laughing in the breeze.

A Call for Hope
Ewa shares their story not from a place of despair, but from a place of hope — hope that the kindness of others can help provide her son with the future he deserves.
“Every donation, every word of support, means the world to us,” she says. “We can’t change what’s happened, but with your help, we can give Wojtek a chance to grow up — to walk, to play, to live.”
Wojtek’s fight is far from over, but his spirit remains unbroken.
He is more than a diagnosis, more than a hospital room. He is a boy who still believes that life — even when it hurts — is worth fighting for.
And with the love of his family and the generosity of strangers, Wojtek just might conquer the toughest match of his life. 💛
