It was a typical afternoon filled with joy and children’s games — until a few innocent words altered everything.
Maksiu and his siblings were engaged in a game of “eye doctor,” taking turns covering one eye to see who had better vision. When it was his turn, the game took a tragic turn.
“I can’t see with this one,” he stated.
Those simple words halted everything. His brothers and sisters rushed to inform their parents. Within moments, their cheerful home was filled with dread.
“That day will remain with us forever,” recalls Maxim Budeev, Maksiu’s father. “We thought it was merely a child’s game, but it turned out to be the start of our worst nightmare.”

A Frightening Diagnosis
At just two years old, Maks was rushed to the hospital for urgent tests. What the doctors discovered shattered his parents’ world — a malignant tumor in his eye.
“We were frozen with fear,” his father remembers. “How could this happen to such a small child? One day he was laughing and playing — the next, we were told he might lose his eye.”
The diagnosis was retinoblastoma — a rare and aggressive type of eye cancer. The doctors explained that the tumor was already advanced, and the only way to save his life might be to completely remove the eye.
However, the family couldn’t accept that. “We wanted to save both his life and his sight,” his father states. “We had to believe there was another way.”
A Race Against Time

Treatment commenced immediately. Chemotherapy was the first step, followed by rounds of painful injections and specialized therapies. The doctors fought not only to halt the cancer but to preserve as much of Maks’s vision as possible.
But each day brought new uncertainty. “The doctors told us they didn’t know if the cancer had spread to his other eye,” his mother recalls. “We didn’t sleep. We didn’t eat. We just prayed.”
Determined not to give up, the family sought specialists abroad — and finally, hope emerged. A clinic in Switzerland agreed to take on Maksiu’s case.
“It was our miracle,” says Maxim. “They didn’t just offer treatment — they offered a chance at life.”
Four Years of Struggle
The following years were long and arduous. Maks underwent chemotherapy, thermotherapy, cryotherapy, and numerous procedures that most adults couldn’t endure — yet he faced them all with quiet courage.
His right eye responded well to treatment. “The tumor there has been stable for years,” Maxim explains. “That eye is healthy now — it’s our miracle success.”
However, the left eye tells a different story. The tumor was large and aggressive, leading to a double retinal detachment. After years of treatment, doctors have finally managed to halt its growth — but remission is still elusive.
Now, the next step looms: a major surgery to replace the lens in his left eye.

Hope, Faith, and the Battle to See
Despite all he has faced, Maks remains a cheerful, spirited little boy. He enjoys music, puzzles, and spending time with his siblings. His laughter fills the home once more — though his parents admit that every giggle carries a subtle echo of fear.
“He’s endured so much pain, yet he still smiles,” Maxim says. “Sometimes he comforts us when we feel like breaking down.”
The family has sacrificed everything to keep him alive — their savings, their time, their strength. But as medical expenses continue to rise, they are once again reaching out for assistance.
“We’ve come so far,” his father states. “We can’t stop now. This is our son’s life we’re fighting for.”
A Call for Support

The upcoming surgery in Switzerland is crucial. Without it, Maks risks losing what little vision remains — and the opportunity to finally be free from the shadow of cancer.
However, the financial burden is overwhelming. Years of treatment abroad, medications, travel, and hospital stays have left the family exhausted both financially and emotionally.
Yet their hope remains unshaken.
“Every act of kindness — every donation, every message, every prayer — keeps us going,” Maxim states. “We’ve learned that the world is filled with good people. Strangers who help simply because they care.”
A Game That Became a Lifeline
Sometimes, fate reveals itself in the most unexpected ways. For the Budeev family, it came through a children’s game — a moment of joy that unveiled the fight of a lifetime.
If not for that game, they might never have discovered the truth.
If not for that moment, Maks might not be here today.
Now, they cling to that same miracle — the belief that hope, love, and the kindness of others can save their little boy once more.
“We don’t ask for much,” his parents say softly. “Just a chance for our son to grow up, to see the world with his own eyes — and to keep smiling.”
Because every child deserves a future filled with light.
And for Maks, that light is still worth fighting for. 💛
