With the Season 1 finale of IT: Welcome to Derry airing on HBO Max on December 14, co-creators Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti have now confirmed that the show was always planned as a three-season story. In an interview with CinePOP, Andy Muschietti said,

For now we are going to finish this story, or our intention is to complete this big story, which is the three seasons of Welcome to Derry, with Season 1 is just the first of three steps in this story, So yeah, a lot more story to cover.

His comments align with his previous comments, where he mentioned wanting to explore Pennywise’s earlier cycles in 1935 and 1908. He told Variety:

Our big story arc involves three seasons, mainly based on the three critical cycles of Pennywise, which are 1962, 1935 and 1908.

The confirmation arrives as It: Welcome to Derry aired its chilling Season 1 finale on HBO Max. While the network has not officially announced a renewal, the creators’ comments make it clear that the prequel series was never meant to be a one-off.

IT: Welcome to Derry Brings the Movie Full Circle

Season 1 of It: Welcome to Derry, set in 1962, served as a direct prequel to the 2017 It movie. The finale, titled Winter Fire, ends with the children using a magical dagger to re-lock Pennywise inside a cosmic cage. It means forcing the creature into another 27-year hibernation. However, the episode also introduces a major idea of the future that Pennywise experiences time differently.

When Marge tells Lilly what It said to her on the ice, she raises a possibility. She asks, “What if he does see time differently? What if he can go backwards?” Pennywise may try to change the past to prevent the Losers Club from ever killing him in the 2016 timeline of It: Chapter Two. Lilly responded, “I guess it will be someone else’s fight,” which sets the stage for the seasons to come.

The season closes with a flash-forward that directly links the series to the movie. Set in 1988, the scene shows an elderly Ingrid Kersh living in Juniper Hill Asylum. Fans can recognize Ingrid as the creepy old woman Beverly Marsh encounters in It: Chapter Two.

The ending also hints at how Beverly’s mother died. In the movie, we have seen her mother already dead and raised by an abusive father. In the series, in the asylum, Ingrid witnesses a tragic moment involving Elfrida Marsh, Beverly’s mother. The scene shows young Bev witnessing her mother’s hanged body. When a young Bev turns toward Ingrid, the woman delivers the same haunting line heard decades later: “No one who dies here ever really dies.”

While HBO has not yet officially confirmed Season 2, the creators have outlined the next steps for the story. Season 2 is expected to move back in time to 1935, exploring an earlier cycle of Pennywise’s terror. Season 3 will go even further, to 1908, uncovering more of the town’s dark history.

Season 2 will likely focus on Pennywise’s manipulation of the past. He will likely attempt to alter events to prevent the Losers Club from forming in the future. The Muschiettis, in the same Variety interview, said that the story is designed to be told backwards in time. Season 2 will likely focus on Pennywise’s manipulation of the past and his attempts to alter events to prevent the Losers Club from forming in the future.

The Muschiettis have noted that the story is designed to be told backwards in time, inspired by the interludes in Stephen King’s novel. Andy said:

I went into the book and looked at he interludes. I realized there was a hidden story there, and that Stephen King was leaving crumbs that could guide [us] somewhere. It’s a story told backwards.

It will allow viewers to see how past tragedies shaped Derry’s horrors and Pennywise’s repeated cycles of evil. Fans can also expect the return of key magical elements introduced in Season 1, including the cosmic dagger and the Shokopiwah pillars, as well as new supernatural lore tied to Derry’s history.
