Macclesfield FC and the wider football community are in deep mourning after 21-year-old forward Ethan McLeod tragically lost his life on Tuesday night, December 16, 2025, following a car accident while returning home from a match. 

McLeod, a promising young English footballer who most recently played for Macclesfield FC in the National League North, was involved in a collision on the M1 motorway near Northampton after travelling back from his team’s away fixture against Bedford Town. Emergency services attended but he sadly died at the scene. 

He began his football journey in the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy at age seven and later had spells with Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge before joining Macclesfield during the summer of 2025. 

A shocking loss for the game

Macclesfield FC released an emotional statement mourning McLeod’s passing, describing him as “an incredibly talented and well-respected member of our first-team squad” whose vibrant personality and work ethic inspired teammates and staff alike. 

Former clubs and players have also paid tribute to his legacy. Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he rose through the youth ranks, announced they will observe a minute’s silence ahead of their next fixture in his honour.
