In a tranquil African river setting, where the still waters mirror the beauty of nature, an astonishing and unforeseen clash took place, leaving spectators astounded. The peaceful atmosphere of the river, home to over 25 hippos leisurely enjoying the water, was disrupted by the arrival of an elephant—a massive creature whose demeanor was far from serene.
Gordon and his wife, who were admiring the scenery from a nearby viewpoint, were surprised to see the calmness of the pool. Crocodiles lounged lazily on the riverbanks, while the hippos, the largest mammals in the area, frolicked in the water. Hippo groups usually consist of 10 to 100 members, primarily females, although young males often stay in the group as long as they respect the dominant male. It appeared to be just another ordinary, peaceful day in the wild.
However, tranquility would not endure for long.

The calm was abruptly broken when an elephant approached the waterhole, thirsty and eager to drink. Yet, the sight of the numerous hippos already in the water did not please the elephant. “He seemed to get upset with the hippos and entered the water, starting to chase them away,” Gordon recounted.
The elephant, visibly agitated, charged through the pool, thrashing in the water. With its trunk and tusks, it aggressively pushed and intimidated the hippos, forcing them to move aside. The elephant’s trumpeting, a loud and unmistakable expression of frustration, resonated through the air, sending the once-peaceful hippos into a frenzy.
Initially, the hippos scattered, attempting to evade the elephant’s fury. But the situation escalated rapidly. The elephant, unwilling to share the waterhole with the large herd, began to chase the hippos more aggressively, using its tusks to knock them around. In the chaos, a baby hippo became isolated on the sandbank, separated from the safety of its group.
Tension mounted as the elephant, intent on asserting its dominance, began to bully the baby hippo. With its powerful trunk, the elephant shoved the defenseless baby around, even tossing it into the air at one point. “Fortunately, he left the baby hippo alone and returned to the water, where he continued to trumpet and thrash about,” Gordon noted, his voice still shaken by the wild display of aggression.
But the drama didn’t conclude there. As the baby hippo, seemingly unhurt but rattled, returned to the water, it followed the elephant, nipping at its rear foot. This provoked another outburst from the furious elephant. The young hippo, still vulnerable, faced the wrath of the powerful creature. However, just as quickly as the elephant’s anger had flared, it seemed to lose interest, and the young hippo was spared.
“Fortunately, he left the baby hippo alone,” Gordon said. “He eventually stopped and returned to the water, where he continued to trumpet and thrash around, settling into his position of dominance.”

Gordon, who has spent over 50 years visiting game parks, admitted that he had never seen an interaction between an elephant and a hippo like this. “If you notice something unusual, keep the camera rolling because you never know what you might capture!” he advised, recognizing that moments like this are rare and provide a unique glimpse into the wild behaviors of these two formidable animals.
This encounter served as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife. The elephant’s aggressive behavior, possibly driven by territorial instincts, showcased the raw power of the animal. Meanwhile, the baby hippo’s survival against the elephant’s overwhelming strength underscored the delicate balance of nature—where even the smallest creatures can face seemingly insurmountable challenges.

The footage captured not only the strength and dominance of the elephant but also the vulnerability and determination of the baby hippo. Nature’s rules are unforgiving, and even in such a serene environment, where life flourishes in harmony, the struggle for dominance and survival is ever-present.
While the elephant’s actions may appear brutal to some, they are driven by deep-seated instincts that govern the animal kingdom. The baby hippo, though briefly threatened, ultimately survived, a testament to the resilience of life in the wild. In the end, the camera captured an unforgettable moment of nature’s rawness—one that will remain in the memories of those fortunate enough to witness it.
