In a cozy hotel bed in Orlando, Jaxen sat, taking it all in. The clean, crisp sheets, the comforting air conditioning, and the welcoming glow of the big TV. For a moment, everything felt perfect. The exhaustion of the past weeks, the grueling treatments, and the uncertainty of each day faded into the background as he lay there, well-rested and ready to take on the day.
It was a special day — Jaxen’s 10th birthday. A day he had been eagerly anticipating for so long. For most children, turning 10 would mean a party or maybe a fun outing with friends. For Jaxen, it meant something far more profound: the chance to celebrate life, to feel joy, and to experience a day of happiness amidst the battle he’s been fighting for two long years.

“We’re just so grateful that he’s made it to this point,” said Randa McCall, Jaxen’s mother, her voice filled with emotion. “Jaxen is a fighter. He’s been through so much, but here he is, getting ready to celebrate his birthday.”
Jaxen and his mom, Randa, live in a public housing community in Pinson, Alabama. Their life has been far from easy. Jaxen is autistic and non-verbal, adding to the complexity of his already difficult life. But it’s the battle against adrenal cancer that has shaped their lives over the past two years. The chemotherapy treatments have been grueling, and every day has been a fight for Jaxen’s survival. But through it all, he’s remained a fighter. He’s shown resilience that is beyond his years, a trait that has carried him through even the darkest of days.

For Randa, the journey has been just as tough. She has another son with autism, and the challenges of raising two children with special needs, while managing the demands of her own life, have been overwhelming. She’s had to make impossible choices, sometimes having to decide between working to support her family and staying home to care for her boys. “It’s like a rollercoaster that never stops,” Randa explained, the exhaustion evident in her voice.
But this weekend, something wonderful happened. Thanks to the Marty Lyons Foundation, which provides “trips of a lifetime” for seriously ill children, Jaxen got the chance to visit Universal Studios and LegoLand in Kissimmee, Florida. This trip, a long-awaited dream for Jaxen, offered him a chance to escape the harsh realities of his illness and experience some joy. Randa hopes that this weekend will provide Jaxen with a much-needed boost of energy and will, even if just for a moment, allow him to forget about the cancer that has been ravaging his body.

“It’s hard to know what each day will bring,” Randa shared, the pain of uncertainty weighing heavily on her heart. “Some days, Jaxen is in so much pain, and we’re crying along with him, watching the cancer destroy his body. Other days, we see him laughing, walking, and talking to us. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions.”
But today, on Jaxen’s 10th birthday, the hope is that it will be a good day. That he will be surrounded by the magic of Universal Studios and LegoLand, that he will feel joy in the midst of everything he’s been through, and that the memories made today will bring him strength for the road ahead.
“I just want him to have a good day,” said Randa. “I want him to enjoy Universal and LegoLand and feel like a kid again. I want him to know how much he’s loved and how grateful we are that he’s here with us.”
As Jaxen continues his journey through the highs and lows of cancer, his family, friends, and supporters are holding their breath, hoping that today — this special birthday — will be one of the good days. They’re sending love, prayers, and support, hoping that Jaxen’s spirit remains strong, and that his little warrior heart continues to fight.
Today, as Jaxen enjoys the magic of theme parks and the comfort of clean hotel sheets, we all share in the hope that his strength, resilience, and the love of his family will carry him through whatever comes next. He is, without a doubt, a fighter, and no matter what happens, he will always be their miracle.
Happy 10th birthday, Jaxen. You are so loved, and your fight inspires everyone around you. May this day bring you joy, laughter, and all the happiness you deserve.
