A Delicate Heart, a Determined Battle — Milenka’s Journey

A Delicate Heart, a Determined Battle — Milenka’s Journey

Some babies come into the world softly, enveloped in tranquility and happiness. Others, like little Milenka Przybyszewska, arrive battling for every breath, every heartbeat, every moment of existence.

From the very first prenatal checkup, her parents sensed that something was amiss. The doctor’s voice quivered as he revealed that their baby had a serious heart defect. More tests ensued, each one bringing new anxiety. They were cautioned that complications could arise after birth — and they did.

Upon her birth, Milenka was swiftly taken from her mother’s embrace. She was placed in an incubator, connected to a ventilator, her tiny chest rising and falling in a mechanical rhythm. Her parents could only observe, feeling helpless, praying for her survival through the night.

Then, just days after her arrival, she faced her first test of bravery — open surgery, which lasted nearly eight hours. The medical team fought to save her delicate lungs and airways. “She was so small,” her mother recalls, “I didn’t think her tiny body could withstand it.” Yet, against the odds, she did.

The surgery was a lifesaver, but the battle was far from over. Her left bronchus narrowed, making it nearly impossible to breathe without constant oxygen support. For months, she was tethered to a tube — the sound of air her constant companion.

In February 2025, doctors attempted bronchodilation, inflating a balloon within her airway to open it. It provided some relief, but not enough. Milenka remained reliant on oxygen until late June. Each breath was still a struggle — one her parents shared, sleepless and weary but resolute in their support.

Feeding her was another challenge. Initially, she depended on a feeding tube, but frequent choking and vomiting made every meal perilous. Her esophagus was raw and inflamed from irritation. Recently, the tube was replaced with a gastrostomy, allowing her to receive nutrition directly into her stomach.

Now, she’s gradually learning to consume small amounts of specialized formula — but her body still struggles to adjust. Every feeding session demands patience, precision, and care. “It breaks my heart to see her struggle even to eat,” her mother says softly.

Milenka’s life is one of continuous medical oversight. She is under the care of a nephrologist, neurologist, ophthalmologist, and gastroenterologist, among others. Each appointment feels like a race against time — public health appointments take months to arrange, and private ones are financially out of reach for her family.

Yet, her parents persist.

They juggle appointments, therapies, and sleepless nights with the fierce resolve of those who love beyond exhaustion. Twice a week, Milenka attends physiotherapy, essential after spending the first six months of her life confined to a bed. Her muscles are weak, her movements uncertain, but she’s making progress. Her physiotherapist notes that she’s improving — slowly but surely — as long as therapy continues regularly.

However, this comes at a price.

Medical supplies, specialized nutrition, rehabilitation equipment, and private consultations — all add up to more than her parents can handle. “We never imagined we’d have to ask for help,” they confess, “but love leaves no room for pride. We’ll do whatever it takes for her to get better.”

Because despite everything, Milenka smiles. A bright, pure smile that illuminates every hospital room. Her parents say it’s that smile that fuels their strength — a reminder that miracles don’t always happen all at once, but in small steps: one good breath, one peaceful night, one less wire.

“We just want her to have a chance,” her mother says. “To breathe freely. To play. To live like other children.”

The journey ahead will be long — filled with checkups, surgeries, therapy, and uncertainty. But it’s also filled with hope. Because where medicine meets love, miracles begin to flourish.

Every donation, every act of kindness, contributes to that miracle. It means another physiotherapy session, another oxygen refill, another day without fear. It means helping a little girl find her way toward the life she deserves — one not defined by pain, but by possibility.

💛 Help Milenka keep fighting.
Assist her in breathing easier, moving stronger, and smiling brighter.

Because no child should have to fight alone — and no parent should have to face the fear of losing their child when hope still exists.
