It’s hard to fathom how much our lives have transformed in just a few months. The reality of our son Mikołaj’s pain has become a shared burden for our entire family. Accepting the diagnosis of cancer still feels surreal. The anguish is immense, and our journey has only just begun.
A Heartbreaking Beginning
It all began in May 2024, when Mikołaj started experiencing severe headaches. They intensified daily. Initially, we thought it was a temporary issue, but soon other symptoms appeared—sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, and a noticeable decline in his overall health. We felt powerless as we watched our son’s condition worsen.
There were moments when Mikołaj would sleep for days, barely waking to eat. We had to rouse him to ensure he consumed something. It was terrifying. As parents, we sensed something was gravely wrong, but we couldn’t comprehend why this was happening to our son.
A False Hope, Then the Truth
Initially, doctors suggested Mikołaj was suffering from migraines, a diagnosis we clung to, hoping it would clarify everything. However, further tests revealed a far more serious reality. Our son had a tumor in his head. The word “cancer” resonated in our minds, shattering our world.
Mikołaj is just a teenager. He should be enjoying his youth, not battling for his life. Yet, he has already undergone five surgeries, including one to partially remove the tumor. Additionally, he developed multi-hormonal hypopituitarism and obstructive hydrocephalus, conditions that necessitate a ventriculostomy. As parents, we cannot fathom why this is happening to our beautiful, innocent son. We feel utterly helpless and heartbroken.
A Battle That Keeps Getting Harder
Currently, Mikołaj’s treatment has progressed to chemotherapy. The impact on his body is devastating. After the first of four planned cycles, the pain returned. The headaches, hydrocephalus, and nausea returned with a vengeance. We witness his suffering daily, and each day feels like a battle.
Doctors have cautioned us that if Mikołaj’s body can withstand it, he will require radiation therapy and possibly more surgery. Yet, even then, there are no assurances. His life hangs in the balance every single day. We are striving to keep our son alive, but the path ahead is long, uncertain, and fraught with challenges.
A Nightmare We Can’t Wake Up From
We wish with all our hearts that this were merely a nightmare—something we could awaken from. But it’s not. This is our reality, unfolding right now. Our son’s life is precariously hanging by a thread, and no amount of pleading can change that.
The Financial Burden
As if the emotional and physical toll weren’t enough, the cost of treatment has already exceeded our financial capabilities. The financial pressure has become as overwhelming as the emotional strain. Each day, we face impossible decisions, knowing that without adequate treatment, Mikołaj’s chances of survival are slim.
