The journey of Nikodem Mikucki is one marked by resilience, affection, and an unwavering quest for hope, even when challenges appeared overwhelming. Initially born with an Apgar score of 10, everything seemed ideal. His parents left the hospital filled with joy, convinced they had a healthy baby boy. However, just a week later, circumstances began to shift.
The Initial Signs of Concern

Initially, Nikodem’s parents, Anna and Piotr, were ecstatic about their son’s arrival, but soon they began to notice troubling signs. He started exhibiting unusual movements that initially seemed minor. As days passed, these movements became more frequent and concerning. Worried, they sought medical advice and were directed to the neonatal pathology department. After a consultation with a neurologist, their worst fears were confirmed—Nikodem had epilepsy.
Treatment commenced immediately, and he was prescribed anti-epileptic medications, but the seizures only intensified. His parents felt helpless as they witnessed the increasing frequency and severity of the seizures. The medication was ineffective, and the future they envisioned for their son seemed to be slipping away.
A Heartbreaking Diagnosis
As if the seizures weren’t enough, the Mikucki family was about to face an even more devastating blow. Nikodem underwent an MRI to investigate the cause of his condition. The results were shattering. Doctors informed Anna and Piotr that their beloved son had suffered brain damage and would never develop normally. They were told there was nothing that could be done to save him. The anguish of hearing such news was unbearable. How could this happen? Why was this occurring to their son when everything during the pregnancy had seemed fine?
Amid their sorrow and shock, they refused to surrender. They would not accept that their son’s life was over before it had truly begun.

A Ray of Hope
Despite the heartbreaking diagnosis, Anna and Piotr desperately sought ways to assist their son. They discovered a neurologist who provided a glimmer of hope. This specialist suggested that Nikodem’s condition—right hemisphere dysplasia—might be correctable through surgery. The only requirement was that Nikodem needed to reach a healthy weight before they could proceed. It was a long wait, but they held onto this new possibility.
However, during this waiting period, they encountered yet another crisis. In January, when Nikodem was just a few months old, he suddenly stopped breathing. In a state of panic, Anna and Piotr called for an ambulance. Their hearts were heavy with fear, but the medical team acted swiftly and decisively. They knew they had to act fast, and soon enough, they managed to schedule a life-altering surgery at the Children’s Health Center.
The Challenging Path Ahead

By February, Nikodem was admitted to a hospital in Warsaw. His treatment was modified, and doctors worked diligently to lessen the intensity and frequency of his seizures. At this point, Nikodem was experiencing up to 70 seizures daily, each one more severe than the last. His inability to control the seizures hindered his normal development. His parents stood by him, offering all the love and support they could muster as he fought for his life.
At five months old, Nikodem underwent a hemispherotomy, a complex and risky procedure involving the removal of the right hemisphere of his brain. This operation represented his only hope, and despite the risks, Anna and Piotr maintained their faith. The surgery was successful, but the recovery journey was far from straightforward.
When Nikodem was discharged from the hospital on April 25th, his parents were overwhelmed with emotion. They felt as though their son had been “reborn.” However, this rebirth came with significant challenges. Nikodem had to relearn everything from eating and drinking from a bottle to moving his body. The process was slow and painful, but each small step forward was a victory.
The Ongoing Struggle

Today, Nikodem’s journey is far from complete. He continues to face significant challenges, particularly with the right side of his body remaining inactive. Yet, there is hope. Each day, he undergoes intensive rehabilitation. His parents take him to therapy multiple times a week, and while they are beginning to see progress, they understand that the road ahead will be long and fraught with difficulties.
Regrettably, the rehabilitation provided through the National Health Fund is limited to just one hour per week. For the remainder, his parents bear the financial burden themselves. Nevertheless, they do not hesitate. Every penny spent on his rehabilitation is viewed as an investment in his future.
A Plea for Assistance

Nikodem’s parents are not seeking sympathy—they are asking for help. They believe that, with the right support, Nikodem can defy the odds. He can learn to stand independently, play with both hands, and lead a life filled with joy and potential. However, they cannot achieve this alone.
The Mikucki family is raising funds to ensure that Nikodem continues to receive the necessary rehabilitation. Every donation, regardless of size, will directly contribute to his care and recovery. They are confident that with your support, they can provide Nikodem with the best chance for a brighter future.
Nikodem’s story exemplifies the strength of hope, love, and determination. While the journey is ongoing, the Mikucki family is resolute in ensuring that their son’s future is filled with possibilities—because every child deserves the opportunity to flourish.
