On October 10, 2014, our lives changed forever in the most wonderful way. Our daughter welcomed a healthy, joyful son—our grandson, Dominik. Observing him grow, sit up, and take his first steps filled us with immense pride and joy. As proud grandparents, we cherished every moment, even as our daughter raised him alone. She did everything possible to keep him happy and smiling. It was a simple, joyful life until one tragic event turned everything upside down.
In April 2016, a devastating accident took everything from us. Our grandson, only 1.5 years old at the time, was in the car with his mother and stepfather when a truck collided with their vehicle. The crash was catastrophic—our daughter and her partner lost their lives instantly. The car was mangled beyond recognition, and the devastation was overwhelming. Yet, against all odds, Dominik survived. He was rushed to the hospital unconscious, suffering from a fractured skull, hematomas on his head and spine, and multiple fractures. His once vibrant body was now a fragile shell.
The medical team fought valiantly to save him. Dominik underwent several critical surgeries, including one to remove a head hematoma. However, the path ahead was long and uncertain. The accident had severed his spinal cord, creating a 10mm gap between his vertebrae. He could not breathe independently, and for months, he was nourished through a tube. His tiny body could no longer move as it once did, leading to a diagnosis of paraplegia and paralysis of his upper limbs.
As grandparents, we struggled to grasp the reality of the situation. One moment, we had a lively, playful grandson; the next, we faced the harsh truth of his paralysis. We were still grappling with the loss of our daughter, yet we had to summon the strength to support Dominik. We knew we couldn’t give up—he needed us more than ever.
The next year and a half were spent in hospitals, filled with numerous surgeries and procedures. Dominik’s fight for life was far from over, but despite the challenges, he continued to show resilience. After all the heartache and pain, our beloved grandson was finally back with us, though his journey was just beginning. He requires constant, 24-hour care and daily rehabilitation to help him regain as much independence as possible.
Today, Dominik is 11 years old, and he relies solely on us—his grandparents. The responsibility of his care rests entirely on our shoulders, and we are doing everything we can to help him regain as much independence as possible. However, this comes with significant costs. The expenses are endless: medication, ointments, dressings, daily rehabilitation, and essential equipment like a wheelchair. As he grows, his needs change. Each new stage of his development brings fresh challenges and costs—especially as his wheelchair requires updates. Dominik also needs catheterization every three hours, and the cost of necessary supplies—catheters, diapers, and other items—is staggering. Even a simple rehabilitation trip can cost up to 15,000 złoty for just two weeks.
Yet, none of these costs compare to the emotional and physical toll we experience daily. We dream of the day we can take Dominik to his mother’s grave so he can walk on his own, but that day feels distant. Every day is a struggle, but Dominik fights too. He’s fighting for his independence, for the ability to live a life filled with joy and fulfillment.
We have not given up on him. He didn’t give up when the odds were against him, and now, as a family, we will not give up on him either. Our dream is simple—to see our grandson play with his peers, to see him walk, to see him smile as he did before everything changed. Dominik won the fight for life, and now he is fighting for the independence he deserves.
We believe in a miracle. We remain hopeful every day that Dominik will continue to progress. However, we need help. We cannot afford to provide him with everything he needs to reach his full potential without the support of others.
