IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1 finale delivers shocking twists, tense showdowns, and sets the stage for Pennywise’s next move.

IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1 ends by confirming one chilling truth about Pennywise: he survives because Derry repeatedly allows fear to take control and spread. Pennywise is only as powerful as the system that protects silence and collective terror. Episode 8 ending makes it clear that stopping the clown is never enough if the town and the military itself remain unchanged.
The HBO Max series concluded its eight-episode run on December 14, 2025, with the finale Winter Fire. The episode, set in 1962, shows Pennywise at the height of his power. The Clown captures Derry’s children using the deadlights. While the immediate threat is stopped in the end, the episode confirms that Pennywise will always return as long as fear is allowed to rule the town.
Did the Kids Defeat Pennywise in IT: Welcome to Derry?
In the finale episode of IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1, the children face a desperate struggle to save their friend Will and the other children. Pennywise marches the children across the frozen river to an ancient tree marking the boundary of his cage.
Lilly, Ronnie, and Marge pursue him, while the adults, led by Dick Hallorann, use mystical powers to track the children and Pennywise. Rose explained that to defeat Pennywise, the dagger must be buried beneath the deadwood at the riverbank before Pennywise gets there.
The weapon resists being moved and gradually disorients whoever holds it. Lilly, Ronnie, and Marge got hold of the dagger. But whoever grabs it, the dagger’s power makes them behave strangely, making them physically and emotionally grueling.
With their commotion, Pennywise appears and targets Marge. Pennywise is aware of the future that Marge is destined to become Richie Tozier’s mother. It was the biggest reveal in this episode. As the kids struggle, Dick uses his psychic powers to distract Pennywise, temporarily freezing him. It releases the kids.
Meanwhile, Leroy and Taniel decided to bring the dagger to the deadwood. But the military complicates their efforts, as Shaw wants the creature to be free. When Dick couldn’t control him anymore, Pennywise confronted Shaw and ate his face. Meanwhile, wounded Leroy hands the dagger to Will.
As the kids get closer to Deadwood, the dagger fights them. At the crucial moment, the spirit of Rich Santos intervenes, helping the children bury the dagger and restore the cage. Though Pennywise is forced back into confinement, the season makes it clear that this victory is only temporary
Is IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Confirmed?

HBO has not officially renewed the series for a second season, but strong ratings and critical interest make a continuation likely. Andy and Barbara Muschietti, along with showrunner Jason Fuchs, have indicated a three-season plan exploring The Dancing Clown’s earlier cycles in 1935 and 1908. Andy Muschietti, in a Variety interview in October, said,
Our big story arc involves three seasons, mainly based on the three critical cycles of Pennywise, which are 1962, 1935 and 1908.
While IT and IT: Chapter Two adapt Stephen King‘s novel, the director also tells how the story is told in reverse,
I went into the book and looked at he interludes. I realized there was a hidden story there, and that Stephen King was leaving crumbs that could guide [us] somewhere. It’s a story told backwards.
Now, it all makes sense. The series is structured to tell Derry’s history backward, the events that shaped the town.
Season 1’s ending leaves audiences with the promise of more terror. Pennywise may be caged for now, but Derry’s cycle of fear continues, and the story of the Losers’ predecessors is far from over. Fans can expect future seasons to explore deeper connections to the original novel while expanding King’s universe.
