Six-year-old Maveryck Docking of Mountain Home, Arkansas, has shown incredible resilience in the weeks following a life-changing medical procedure. Diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare and inoperable brain disease, Maveryck faced a prognosis that would challenge the strongest of hearts. But thanks to the courage of his sister Veralee and a successful bone marrow transplant on September 11, his family has reason to hope.
ALD is a devastating condition that gradually attacks the nervous system, and Maveryck’s diagnosis required urgent intervention. The transplant, in which Veralee’s bone marrow cells were infused into Maveryck, aimed to give his body the tools to fight the progression of the disease. For weeks, Maveryck remained at Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, undergoing careful monitoring and supportive care as his body adjusted to the new cells..

Now, 34 days post-transplant, the family is beginning to see encouraging signs. Nikki, Maveryck’s mother, shared an update filled with gratitude and cautious optimism: “The past couple of days up until today have been pretty chill—a little nausea here and there, but overall, they were good days. Last night, we don’t know what got into our little fighter, but after weeks, he tried to stand up on his own! He also sat up several times by himself! We were so excited and thought today would keep going just like that.”
Yet recovery is rarely linear. Nikki recounted a frightening episode that morning: “Around 9 a.m., the doctors came in, and I noticed his eyes only staying to the left. At first, we thought maybe he was just looking over at me, but a few minutes later it was clear—his eyes, head, and neck were all fixed to the left. They gave him some meds, and for a few short minutes, Mav was responding and his eyes went back to normal, but that came after nearly two long hours.”

The hospital responded immediately, calling the MET team as Maveryck’s vitals fluctuated. While still under close observation and connected to EEG monitoring, his seizure medication was adjusted to provide further protection. “This morning was definitely a scare for us,” Nikki explained, “but we’re so thankful for everyone checking in and praying. We’ll keep you all updated in the next few days once we know more.”
Maveryck’s progress, from the first signs of standing and sitting independently to the careful management of new symptoms, illustrates the precarious yet hopeful nature of recovery after a bone marrow transplant. Each small milestone—a smile, a step, a responsive glance—is a triumph over a condition that has already taken so much.

The courage of Maveryck’s sister Veralee, who selflessly donated her bone marrow, cannot be overstated. Her act gave Maveryck a second chance at life, transforming the hope of his family into tangible medical progress. The Docking family has navigated long days, emotional strain, and moments of fear, yet their focus remains on supporting Maveryck with love, optimism, and vigilance.
Maveryck’s journey underscores the fragility and resilience of children facing life-threatening conditions. It also highlights the critical importance of family, community, and medical innovation in providing a path toward survival and quality of life. While setbacks, such as potential seizure activity, remind everyone that the road ahead is not without challenges, each day brings progress, small victories, and renewed hope.

For the Docking family, every gesture of support—prayers, messages, and shared encouragement—has made a difference. It reminds us all that even from a distance, community can surround a child with strength and love. Maveryck is not just a patient; he is a symbol of courage, determination, and the enduring power of family bonds.
As Maveryck continues his recovery, the family is taking it one day at a time, celebrating each step forward while remaining vigilant for any complications. His story is far from over, but it already inspires hope, reminding us that even in the face of rare and serious illness, perseverance, love, and medical expertise can create life-saving outcomes.
Please join us in sending your best wishes to Maveryck, celebrating his progress, and offering strength to his family as they navigate this critical period. Every thought, every prayer, and every show of support counts in the fight for life and health.
