The fog in IT: Welcome to Derry isn’t tied to The Mist. Creators explain its true meaning and shut down multiverse theories for good.

Stephen King fans, we’ve got some bad news! The thick fog swallowing the town of Derry, Maine, might remind you of The Mist, and it was so convincing that the theory of an interconnected multiverse spread fast, but the show’s creators have confirmed that it’s not the case (via Entertainment Weekly)
IT: Welcome to Derry is set in 1962, and it dives into Derry’s buried history, plus how “It” spreads fear, influence, and control. After the season finale, titled Winter Fire, the creators have finally put The Mist connection rumors to rest, so let’s look at what exactly they’ve said about the same!
Why The Fog in IT: Welcome to Derry Is Not Linked to The Mist
The idea that IT: Welcome to Derry might connect to The Mist is understandable because Stephen King frequently works through such shared concepts. The fog looks eerily similar to the mist that engulfs Bridgton, Maine, in King’s novella.
Here’s an overview of the show:
| Creator | Jason Fuchs, Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti |
| Based on | It by Stephen King |
| Cast | Bill Skarsgård, Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Clara Stack, Amanda Christine, Mikkal Karim-Fidler |
| Number of Episodes | 8 |
| Rotten Tomatoes Score (so far) | 80% |
| IMDb Score (so far) | 7.9/10 |
| Streaming on | HBO Max |
But creator Andy Muschietti has shut down the theory completely by saying (via EW), “There is no connection to The Mist. I am sorry to disappoint everyone with this.” So, there’s sadly no crossover here because, according to co-showrunner Brad Caleb Kane, a portal would have to open up into Todash Darkness for the mist to pour in and carry the monsters along with it.
IT: Welcome to Derry’s Creator Reveals What The Fog Represents

The fog in IT: Welcome to Derry is generated by Pennywise itself and is a visual language of his expansion. It helps the entity to move through Derry and abduct school students. So it’s not an environmental effect but something that Pennywise controls (via EW).
You see it in episode 4 at the end when Taniel [Joshua Odjick] is telling the story and we see how the asteroid hits the Earth. After the explosion, we see the Deadlights are basically surrounded by this smokey fog that trails back. We decided to make that the language of It’s expansion.
Andy Muschietti further spoke about how Pennywise was historically contained and couldn’t expand beyond Derry. But now with those restraints gone, the fog shows that his supernatural force is expanding outward.
So, are you upset to know that Welcome to Derry is not connected to The Mist, or are you happy that they’re exploring a single story with more nuance and depth?
IT: Welcome to Derry is currently streaming on HBO Max (USA).
