Theo had a relatively stable day, although he did encounter several desaturation episodes, which have been a recurring issue. These episodes, where Theo’s oxygen levels unexpectedly drop, are among the many complications his medical team is closely monitoring. After discussing with one of his Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) specialists, it became evident that Theo requires additional respiratory support during his sedation weaning process. The team concurred that while progress is being made, Theo’s comfort and respiratory health must take precedence during this crucial phase. Tomorrow, the BPD team will reassess his care plan, aiming to adjust his respiratory support and reduce the desaturation episodes.
While the medical team diligently addresses Theo’s immediate needs, his parents have also been actively seeking additional support. Today, they requested an evaluation from an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist to examine Theo’s airway for potential signs of bronchial tracheal malacia, a condition that can cause airway collapse due to weakness. If confirmed, Theo may require a custom-fit tracheostomy tube, a significant decision with long-term implications for his care. It’s a daunting possibility, but one they are prepared to confront, knowing that every step taken is for Theo’s well-being.
Amid the ongoing medical challenges, today also brought a much-needed moment of joy: Theo’s Lolli (grandmother) came to visit him. The emotional significance of this visit cannot be overstated. Theo’s family has endured so much, and seeing Lolli bring supplies, including crib sheets and NICU-friendly outfits that accommodate his leads and wires, was a reminder that they are not alone in this battle. What made this visit even more special was that Lolli was able to hold Theo for the very first time.
This was a moment that filled their hearts with joy. Toby and his wife had been cautious about allowing others to hold Theo while he was intubated, fully aware of his fragile condition and the risks associated with his ongoing treatment. They had waited until Theo received his trach, a stable airway, before permitting others to hold him. This decision stemmed from love and caution, but today, Lolli was finally able to hold her grandson. The sight of Theo in his grandmother’s arms, safe and secure, brought tears to everyone’s eyes. It was a moment of pure love, a reminder that even in the toughest times, the strength of family is invaluable.
Theo’s medical team also introduced a new strategy to help alleviate his swelling, particularly around his face. Physical therapy (PT) suggested using kinesiology tape (KT tape), a method often employed to reduce facial swelling. Initially, Theo’s family was unfamiliar with this technique, but after researching it, they found that KT tape has been shown to effectively reduce edema. This new approach exemplifies the creative, patient-centered care that is aiding Theo on his journey. The use of KT tape, though minor, serves as a reminder that each day brings new strategies, solutions, and opportunities to enhance Theo’s comfort and quality of life.
Although Theo’s road to recovery is far from straightforward, today’s update also signifies notable progress. The medical team is actively addressing Theo’s respiratory needs, working to minimize the desaturation episodes. His primary nurse, who has been with him throughout much of his journey, remains a steadfast source of support. She understands Theo’s needs better than anyone, and her experience and affection for Theo have been crucial in managing his care. Having her back with Theo today was yet another small but meaningful victory for the family.
In addition to medical adjustments, tomorrow holds the promise of further progress. Toby, Theo’s father, will spend the day with him at the hospital, which always brings the family a sense of comfort and connection. They also plan to meet with a couple of DME (Durable Medical Equipment) companies that visited the bedside today. These companies are collaborating with the family to ensure they have the necessary medical equipment when they can bring Theo home. Although the journey to bring Theo home is still some time away, the thought of preparing for that next phase instills hope and a sense of forward momentum.
Throughout all of this, Theo’s family continues to be deeply touched by the outpouring of support from friends, family, and even strangers. The prayers, messages, and acts of kindness have provided strength and comfort. Every prayer and word of encouragement has been profoundly felt by his parents as they navigate the emotional rollercoaster of caring for their son. They understand that while the road ahead is still filled with uncertainty, the love and prayers surrounding Theo are making a difference.
