Trey’s story began on March 10th, 2023, when he was diagnosed with Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT), a rare and aggressive type of brain cancer. In the U.S., fewer than 60 cases of ATRT are diagnosed annually, and there is currently no known cure. From the moment of his diagnosis, Trey’s life—and that of his family—was irrevocably altered. Yet, despite the daunting odds, Trey has never lost hope.
His mother, Ebony Lowman, remembers the day their lives changed forever. “Trey has faced an unimaginably tough journey with a strength that surpasses his years,” she shares. His treatment has been extensive and harsh, involving procedures and therapies that no child should endure. Trey’s path has included four rounds of high-dose chemotherapy, two brain surgeries, a stem cell transplant, and 29 rounds of proton radiation. Throughout it all, he has fought with a bravery and determination that belies his young age.
In November 2023, after enduring his rigorous treatment, Trey and his family celebrated a moment of joy—he was in remission. For nine precious months, the Lowman family held their breath, hoping the cancer was gone for good. However, on August 5th, 2024, the unthinkable occurred: Trey’s cancer returned.
The news devastated the family, serving as a harsh reminder that the fight was far from over. Yet, despite this setback, Trey’s spirit remained unbroken. “After the recurrence, he underwent laser ablation brain surgery and began five rounds of photon radiation targeting his optical nerve to halt the tumor’s growth,” Ebony explains. Despite the ongoing pain and challenges, Trey approached each new treatment with the same courage he had shown from the start.
As if the challenges weren’t enough, the Lowman family received more heartbreaking news on September 19th, 2025, during a routine MRI. Trey’s cancer had spread to his brainstem and spine. The family was crushed, but once again, Trey’s resilience shone through. He began another round of 20 photon radiation treatments, this time aimed at his brain and spine, in a desperate attempt to slow the disease’s progression.
This journey has taken a significant toll on Trey and his family—physically, emotionally, mentally, and financially. Ebony had to leave her job to care for Trey full-time, while her husband worked tirelessly to support their family. The burden has been immense, but Ebony remains resolute, believing that no family should face childhood cancer alone. She has become Trey’s strongest advocate, raising awareness, supporting research, and providing unwavering love and care. “Through it all, we continue to walk by faith, holding on to hope and praying that our brave son can withstand this battle,” Ebony states.

They pray that this treatment will slow the cancer’s growth and grant them more time with their beloved boy. “We are praying this treatment slows down the cancer and God gives us more time with our precious boy,” Ebony expresses. They hold on to the belief that with each passing day, they are one step closer to a miracle.
